
Jean Camp, professor of informatics at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, was selected as a panel member for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in its 2022 Assessment of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Communications Technology Laboratory.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, provides independent, objective advice to inform policy with evidence, spark progress and innovation, and confront challenging issues to benefit society.
The National Academies work to address some of society’s toughest challenges and strengthen the scientific, engineering and medical fields. Their reports are considered by many the gold standard for objectivity and thoroughness.
This assessment, conducted at the request of the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, addressed the Communications Technology Laboratory’s management. The panel focused on the work, facilities, equipment, personnel and portfolios of scientific expertise, and reviewed how effectively results were disseminated.
Camp was one of the assessment’s 13 panelists from universities and corporations around the country.
The panel noted the laboratory’s high level of technical quality, the excellence of the staff’s technical expertise and their effectiveness in disseminating work through publications in top-tier, peer-reviewed journals and invited talks. The panel expressed concern about shortcomings in some facilities.
